A bacteriological and epidemiological survey on the distribution of reservoirs of enteric infections in Korea
Loh In-Kyu

Abstract
In regard to the control of acute enteric infections, it has been well known that the existence of chronic carriers is necessary to convey the epidemic from one to the other and from one place to the other as well as that of apparent cases since the intensivie investigations were undertaken in Germany under the auspices of Robert Koch in the early years of present centruy.
It has been experienced in Korea that quite a number of cases of typhoid fever have been reported for many years in spite of devoting much effort to control the disease every year.
The authors attempted to find out the distribution of the carriers or excreters and of apparent cases which had been understood as only reservoir in case of typhoid fever and consequently a number of enteric pathogens were detected among them.
The model areas were selected out from each city and province, and the stool specimens were taken from each individual by meana of rectal swab or defecated stool. Those were transported in Cary and Blair meaia to either provincial hygiene laboratories or directly to the Korean National Salmonella Center in NIH where the screening tests could be carried to the Salmonella Center in order to be bacteriologically and serologically confirmed as well as the cultures detected by the Salmonella Center itself.
The results obtained from the survey were summarized in the present report.
